Meet Kay

Dementia coach, consultant, trainer and speaker

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Compassion Works, LLC. I have over 30 years of experience counseling and coaching individuals and families around a broad array of complex emotional and health-related challenges. I have worked extensively in the fields of geriatrics, hospice, palliative care and mental health counseling over the course of my career. Since 2001, I have served in a variety of capacities with people living with dementia, as well as with their families and caregivers. As a result of this intimate and rewarding work, I have developed a strong passion and expertise for supporting, educating, coaching and training personal and professional caregivers around issues related to life-limiting illnesses, grief and loss, and the disease of dementia.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska in 1984 and a Masters in Social Work from Augsburg College in 1994. I am a Certified Dementia Consultant with Teepa Snow and Positive Approach to Care, and started my own company Compassion Works, LLC in 2017 in order to focus my passion and energy on engaging care partners and organizations impacted by dementia.

I was born and raised in Lincoln Nebraska, and spent 10 years living in St Paul Minnesota before relocating permanently to the beautiful Denver area in 1987 where my son Eli was born. He has expanded my ability to love and be compassionate in profound ways, and is the greatest teacher and blessing of my life. When I am rejuvenating myself away from work, I relish spending time with my family and friends, being in nature, deepening my spiritual path, spoiling my pets, reading, writing, laughing, learning, and traveling whenever I get the chance.

Compassion Works, LLC

Creating Compassion Works has been the culmination of a dream.

Since 2001, I have been privileged to provide education and support to care partners impacted by dementia in a variety of capacities and settings. Serving in this way has changed me from the inside out, and for the better. Witnessing the ongoing emotional, physical, psychological and financial burdens that caregivers content with for years in relative isolation, has given me incredible empathy and respect for the complex and challenging roles they play every day.

Observing the huge gaps that exist around providing adequate support and education to care partners first-hand, has further fueled my desire to dedicate my time and energy into improving the lives of care partners in meaningful ways. That desire culminated in starting Compassion Works, LLC in 2017—a company dedicated to empowering dementia care partners through coaching, consulting, education and training. It has become my passion, my mission, and my life’s work.
